What can I do to help my site regarding search engines, without spending money?

Use the power of your Springboard to manage the content in some critical search engine related areas. Here are the four most important things you can focus on using your Springboard, plus a bonus Best Practices PDF.

1. Search Engine Title. This is the single most important SEO factor right now. Period. For people with a slow internet connection, it's often the first text they see. It's the text shown at the top of your browser window and the label of a browser tab, and it tells visitors what they can expect to find on the page. Until the importance of the search engine title changes, focus every ounce of energy into populating these correctly. Most search engines index the first 65 characters, which can become the linked headings on search results pages. Remember, LESS means STRONGER. Put the most descriptive words about your page first in the Search Engine Title, and don't waste a single character.

  • In your Springboard click My Website and then Website Content.
  • Click the gear icon for a page and click Edit SEO Info.
  • Type your text into Search Engine Title. If you leave it empty, what you've typed into the Page Title field will be used.
  • Keep this window open, and move on to ingredient number 2.

2. Search Engine Description. This is important because not only do search engines look for keywords inside descriptions, but the Search Engine Description is the paragraph of text that shows on the search engine results page (SERP). It's what "sells" the end user to click on your website versus all of the others listed. This is your sales proposition. Focus on key words, but make your blurb compelling so they WANT to click on your website. Don't make it too "salesy" though. Limit to one or two sentences (150 characters) or less.

  • In your Springboard, you'll find this also on the Edit SEO Info window as described above.

Ensure the Title and Description Tags include your geographic location info. Update if not.

  • For the Title tag, include the product or service name and | Your City, ST so the tag looks like this, for example:
    • Custom Banners & Banner Printing | Albany, NY
  • In the Description, insert your company name, city and state, or region in the text where appropriate.

For example,
Good: Banners are a great way to make a big impact in today's competitive landscape. In addition to traditional vinyl banners, you can rely on us to print custom banners that will get your business noticed. We've worked hard to hone our craft.

3. Links.
This may take some legwork, but it's important. Use internal links inside your website. Search engines view pages positively that have links on each page. Make sure the anchor text of the links (the words that are the hyperlinks), or the alt tags of linked images are using keywords. For example, if you mention "banner", link that word or image to your "banner" page. Link, link, link. Link to other sites. Have other sites link to yours.

4. Content. Content, content, content. Write well. Use key words naturally in your page text, but make sure to repeat them as necessary. Remember all the types of content you can update with your Springboard: Headlines, text, image captions, image alt tags. Use synonymous terminology. Elaborate and explain, but don't be too long.
